The Shades are a R&B, Jazz, and Hip-Hop band. The members of the Shades range from members that have been classically trained to those that have been gifted.

The Shades began in 1992 with four members: Kensington Waters, Bender Davis, Shelia Dexter, and Scott Williams. The four members were managed by Tony Sindelar. In late 1992, the remaining members of the group were added. These members consist of Mahalia Beck, Dasanie Howard, Alvin Cole, Greg Prayzer, and Grace Terrelle.

Kensington, Bender, Shelia, and Scott all attended the same school. They formed a group to enter a high school talent show. After they one the contest, Tony Sindelar suggested that they continue the group. The four continued to perform at events and parties in the area. After a few months, Tony saw a need to add more members to the band. The Shades began to hold auditions. After two months of auditioning people, the remaining members of the Shades had been chosen.

The Shades continued to play in the area. They entered and won contests all over the state of Maddocha. The biggest contest they won was the Rising Star Talent Show. At this talent show, they caught the eye of Alexander Lewis.

Alexander asked to set up a meeting with Tony Sindelar, the group's manager. Alexander introduced Tony to David Hannard, the president of K-3080 Records. After careful deliberation and thought, on February 1, 1996, the Shades signed with K-3080 Records.

The group began to work on their first album. At first, it was hard coming up with songs for the group because they wanted to write and produce their own material which they were use to doing. Alexander and David Hannard wanted the group to work with the record companies writers and producers. There was a two-month struggle with the group and the record company before the Shades were allowed to use their own material.

The group decided to release all of their albums on February 1st of every year to commemorate the day that they signed with K-3080 Records. On February 1, 1997, the Shades released the first album entitled, The Shades: Acting A Fool.

The Shades first album was a success. It moved up the chart quickly. The Shades continued to play in Dorinda and the state of Maddocha. The Shades wanted to stay true to their fans. They refused to quit doing what had made them successful.

Calls were constantly coming into K-3080 Records about the Shades. In 1997, the Shades were voted as the best band in Maddocha. The Shades also were constantly being featured in the newspaper for their community activities and charity work.

The Shades have continued the work over the past four years. The Shades continue to be the top band in the state of Maddocha.
