Mahalia Beck was born on March 30, 1979 to Bob Beck and Martina Avery. When she was a baby, Mahalia was very sweet, so her mother called her Sweets.  Mahalia grew up in the church.  She was even named after the great Mahalia Jackson. Mahalia Beck was often characterized as a troublemaker.  She was always in trouble for doing something.
When she turned 15, she became interested in playing the piano.  She became very skilled at playing the piano.  She turned her life around. She was no longer a troublemaker.

She went to audition to become a member of a newly formed group called The Shades in 1992.  She did not make the group the first time.  About two months after the audition, Mahalia received a call from Tony Sindelar, The Shades manager.  She became a member of The Shades after that phone call.
