Acting a Fool was meant to be a fun way to start The Shades recording career. One night while rehearsing at Dasanie Howard's house, Dasanie´s mother commented to the group, "Why are you all acting a fool?" Thus, the title of this album was born.

Acting a Fool features five instrumental songs and six vocal songs. All but one of the songs were written and produced by the group.

Marcus Caldoun, one of the hottest producers in Maddocha wrote and produced a song on the album. The song is entitled, "I Know." The song depicts the plight of the world. This song moved Dasanie Howard greatly having lost her father to violence a two years earlier.
