Montfort Parks was born in 1980. He began singing in the youth choir at Absanie Baptist Church. He was very soft spoken and would not open his mouth to sing very loud. The youth choir president overheard Montfort singing in the restroom at church. Montfort (Montie as he is called) had a nice voice. The choir president assigned Montie a song to lead. He was very nervous and did not sing. Another person sung the solo instead of Montie. The choir president assigned Montie another song. Montie this time, but messed up in the middle of the song. He got so mad that he left the choir stand. Montie's father reprimanded him so harshly that Montie lost his desire to sing. He remained a member of the youth choir, but when the choir sung, Montie only moved his lips. He did not actually sing. Once the youth choir president realized what Montie was doing, he took Montie under his wing. The choir president began to give Montie voice lessons. Montie began to become a better singer. Soon, Montie was volunteering to sing solos in the choir. In high school, Montie and his best friend Charles Arthur Baylor formed a singing group with two other guys. The group did not last long because of creative differences. Montie and Charles continued to write music. Charles composed the music, Montie wrote the lyrics. They entered a jingle writing contest for Bestmade Foods, Inc. in 1994. Their jingle won. The jingle featuring their song and Montie's voice was used in all of Bestmade Foods' advertising. The jingle caught the attention of Mark Rue, a talent scout for K-3080 Records. He liked Montie's voice and looked Montie up. He met with Montie, Montie's father, and Charles. Charles was only a year older than Montie, but he always acted as Montie's manager. Mark offered to sing Montie to a developmental artist deal. Charles told Mark no. Charles knew that a developmental artist did not have as much success as a full-blown artist. From February 1995 until September 1996, Charles worked with Montie. Charles had Montie taking all kinds of lessons and rehearsing all the time. Charles was reading all kinds of information about the music industry. Charles almost dropped out of school, because he had become consumed with the music industry. Montie told Charles that if he dropped out of school, Charles could not be his manager. Charles stayed in school. In October of 1996, Charles called Mark Rue of K-3080 Records and asked him to attend a talent show that Montie was singing at. Mark attended the talent show. Charles handed Mark a demo tape and an artist package. Montie showed out at the talent show. Mark was very impressed with Montie and Charles' work. Mark met with Charles and Montie a month later. This time, Montie signed with K-3080 as an artist. Montie recorded his first CD in 1998. It was entitled, Here's Montfort, That Boy Can Sang. The CD was very successful. Montie sung on the Absanie Baptist Church Centennial Celebration CD. He also sings with the Absanie Community Choir. |
